Navigating the Pressures of Being a High School Student Athlete: Understanding and Overcoming

At Find My Team, we understand that being a high school student athlete isn’t just about the wins and losses on the field—it’s also about navigating pressures that can sometimes feel overwhelming. From balancing schoolwork and practice to handling the expectations of coaches, peers, and even ourselves, it’s easy to fall into the trap of feeling like you have to be perfect. But here’s the thing: you are enough just the way you are, and everything will work out. Let’s dive into understanding these pressures and some tips to help you navigate them like a pro!

Understand the Pressure:

One of the biggest sources of pressure for student athletes is the feeling that they have to be perfect in every aspect of their lives. Whether it’s maintaining a high GPA, excelling in multiple sports, or impressing college scouts, the demand for perfection can feel relentless. This pressure often stems from external expectations—from coaches, parents, or the perceived standards set by peers and rivals. It can also come from within yourself, driven by your own desire to succeed or fear of failure.

Other sources of pressure include social media, comparing yourself to others, and your own fear of failure. You may be one of the many student athletes who scroll and swipe through hundreds of posts that show the successes of others who have already gone through the college recruiting process. It makes you feel like you are behind. Therefore, you spend your valuable time comparing yourself to others and you get frustrated. What if you don’t get what they get? Your fear of failure begins to lead the way and your decision-making becomes affected.  It’s a dangerous slope.

Instead of succumbing to the noise, here are some ways to help you navigate through the pressures.

Tips to Mitigate Pressure:

  1. Set Realistic Goals: Break down your long-term goals into smaller, achievable steps. Celebrate each milestone along the way to keep yourself motivated. You don’t have to accomplish everything all at once. Setting goals can help you stay accountable to yourself and your future.
  2. Manage Time Wisely: Create a balanced schedule that includes dedicated time for academics, athletics, rest, and social activities. This helps prevent burnout and ensures you stay on track. Of all the activities above, the one that gets left out the most is, rest. Make sure you are finding time for recovery, both mental and physical. It is very important.
  3. Focus on Growth, Not Perfection: Understand that mistakes and setbacks are part of the journey. Use them as opportunities to learn and improve rather than reasons to feel defeated. Growth happens whether you win or lose, so make sure you are looking at your performance through that lens.
  4. Keep the Focus on Your Own Journey:  It is so easy to start comparing yourself to others. It is normal, but if left unchecked, it could cause you to derail, become frustrated, and even lose focus. Instead of focusing on what others are doing, or getting, in the recruiting process, just focus on what you need to do next. Everyone’s journey is different, and every year college coaches are looking for different things. So it doesn’t help to compare yourself to what is happening to someone else.
  5. Seek Support: Don’t be afraid to reach out to coaches, teammates, teachers, or mentors for guidance and encouragement. Having a support system can make a world of difference. Make sure your support is genuine and real. When you really need an advisor, who is there for you, and will that person or persons help you without judgment.
  6. Take Breaks: It’s okay to step away from the game and recharge. Engage in activities that bring you joy and help you relax, whether it’s reading, listening to music, or spending time with loved ones. Taking breaks from sports is the thing that keeps you most fresh and revitalized for the next moment, competition, season, and year.
